Sleigh beds explained: Everything you need to know

Article navigation

Sleigh beds make an impressive centrepiece for a spacious bedroom. Known for their elegant curves resembling a horse-drawn sleigh, they come in various styles and materials to suit modern and traditional homes.

What is a sleigh bed?

A well-designed bed frame can transform your sleeping space. Sleigh beds feature an elegant, curved-shaped design, creating a warm and inviting sleeping environment. This style dates back to the early 1800s and draws inspiration from ancient Rome and Greece.

Sleigh beds were traditionally made from wood, but nowadays, they are also made from other materials like metal, fabric, and leather. They have a timeless appeal and can work well in traditional and modern homes.

Aesthetics appeal

A sleigh bed is a distinctive style of bed frame that features a curved headboard and footboard resembling a sleigh.  It has an elegant and dramatic look that can complement various bedroom styles.

Traditional sleigh beds usually feature more intricate detailing, such as carved panels, decorative trims and ornate patterns. In contrast, modern sleigh beds are less elaborate, with cleaner lines and more subtle curves.

Some sleigh beds feature a low foot end or no footboard at all. These designs work well in smaller bedrooms, as they help make the space feel more open and inviting.

Are sleigh beds dated?

Despite their classic design, sleigh beds have a timeless appeal and remain very much in style. The design has evolved. While many appreciate their distinctive shape with tall headboards and raised sides, modern sleigh beds are often more understated and may include built-in storage options to suit contemporary homes.

Types of sleigh beds

Sleigh beds come in various styles, designs, and finishes to complement different bedroom décors. Whether you prefer a classic wooden frame with elegant details or a modern upholstered design with sleek lines and a comfortable headboard, there are plenty of options to consider.

Wooden sleigh beds

Traditional sleigh beds are often made from hardwoods and softwoods, such as oak, mahogany, walnut, beech, and pine. Wood has a distinctive grain, and its tones create a warm and inviting sleeping space.

Wooden sleigh beds often draw inspiration from French design. They are beautifully crafted with elegant curves, intricate carvings, and decorative motifs, which give them a soft, romantic and luxurious look.

Many wooden bed frames are available with matching bedroom furniture, such as bedside cabinets, chest of drawers and wardrobes, allowing you to create a coordinated, streamlined look.

Metal sleigh beds

Metal sleigh beds are made from durable materials like iron, steel, and aluminium. They come in various colours, including cream, black, and antique brass, and are often powder-coated for durability. These beds are strong and versatile, with designs ranging from sleek, clean lines to intricate floral patterns and scrollwork, making them suitable for both modern and traditional bedrooms.

Upholstered sleigh beds

Some sleigh beds are beautifully upholstered in a range of sumptuous plain or textured fabrics, giving them a warm and cosy appearance. Certain designs feature detailed button tufting or contrasting piping for a more striking look. Upholstered sleigh beds are also comfortable to lean against, making them perfect for those who enjoy sitting up in bed to read or watch television.

Mattress support

Most sleigh beds come with solid or sprung slats for mattress support. Sprung slats are flexible and provide some cushioning for the mattress, while solid slats are flat and rigid.

Most mattresses are suitable for use on a sleigh bed. However, it’s always best to double-check the two are compatible, especially if you’re buying both separately. It’s also advisable to test the mattress on a similar bed base to the one you’ll be using. Slatted bases provide a slightly firmer feel compared to sprung divan bases.

Do sleigh beds take up more space?

With their distinctive shape, sleigh beds are usually larger and take up more space than other beds. This makes them ideal for spacious rooms, such as a master bedroom, where they become a stunning centrepiece without overwhelming the space. Because of their size, it’s essential to take accurate measurements of your room to ensure the sleigh bed will fit into the intended space.

Many sleigh beds have curved headboards and footboards that can take up extra space. Ensure there’s enough space, especially at the bottom of the bed, to walk around it comfortably. Also, check the headboard’s height, especially if your room has low ceilings or beams.

While sleigh beds typically come flat-packed, their large headboards and footboards can be difficult to manoeuvre. Check your property’s access by measuring doorways, stairs, and tight corners to ensure the bed will fit into the bedroom.

Do sleigh beds come with storage options?

Sleigh beds tend to have thicker side panels that sit lower to the floor, leaving less space underneath for storage and cleaning. However, some sleigh beds come with drawers or lift-up mechanisms that provide storage underneath for items like bedding and clothing.

Are sleigh beds heavy?

Sleigh beds can be heavy and difficult to move. Wooden sleigh beds, in particular, are often made from hardwoods, such as mahogany, oak, and beech, which tend to be denser and more robust. Sleigh beds typically have larger headboards and footboards, which can be much heavier than standard ones.

Once you’ve chosen a sleigh bed, measure your bedroom space carefully. Plan your room layout and arrange furniture around the bed. Proper planning will help you avoid the need to move the bed or rearrange furniture later on.

You can purchase self-adhesive furniture sliders or glides, which attach to the bed’s feet and make it easier to move when needed.

Are sleigh beds comfortable?

Depending on the material and design, Sleigh beds can be comfortable to lean against. Their large, curved headboards generally offer good support for the head and neck. Upholstered sleigh beds, in particular, are usually well-padded and covered in soft fabrics, making them comfortable to rest against.

In contrast, metal sleigh beds may not be as comfortable to lean against, and you may need a pillow for support. However, pillows can sometimes fall between the gaps in the bars, which can be frustrating.

Are sleigh beds easy to clean?

Metal and wooden sleigh beds are generally easy to clean and maintain. Both types can be routinely cleaned with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris.

Upholstered sleigh beds are harder to clean and maintain. Check the care label or manufacturer’s instructions for the safest and most effective way to clean the material. Always test any cleaning products on an inconspicuous area of the bed to ensure compatibility.

Final thoughts

Sleigh beds are a popular type of bed frame that can create a striking statement in a spacious bedroom. Choose a style that compliments your décor and lifestyle and ensure the frame can support your mattress correctly.
