Should you use a valance sheet with your bed?

Article navigation

A valance sheet is an item of bedding with a decorative skirt or valance covering the sides of the bed, enhancing the overall look.

A valance sheet is a type of bed sheet with a decorative frill or valance covering the sides of the bed. They are mainly used for decorative purposes to cover up unsightly bed bases. Valance sheets are available in various styles and are an effective way to introduce patterns, colours, and textures into the bedroom.

Reasons to use a valance sheet

A valance sheet is a useful item of bedding that can make a bed look more attractive. But there are plenty of other reasons to use a valance.

Concealing bed bases

One of the main reasons to use a valance sheet is to conceal unattractive or worn-out bed bases. For example, older divan bases were often upholstered in unsightly materials. A valance sheet not only hides the unsightly material but also enhances the bedroom’s look.

Valance sheets also provide a practical fix for beds with worn bases showing signs of wear and tear. They offer a cost-effective solution, covering imperfections without having to replace the bed base. However, it’s generally not advisable to place a new mattress on an old, worn-out bed base. Doing so could invalidate its guarantee or warranty.

Dust prevention

A valance sheet protects the bottom of the bed, preventing the accumulation of dirt, dust, and debris underneath. This is especially beneficial for sleepers with allergies or asthma.

By creating a barrier, the valance sheet confines any accumulated dust particles under the bed to a smaller, more manageable area, which is easier to clean and maintain.

Eliminate drafts

Valance sheets can prevent cold air or drafts from under the bed, creating a cosier and more comfortable sleep environment.

Hide items underneath the bed

Valance sheets hide items under the bed, promoting a more organized and clutter-free space.

Is a valance sheet necessary?

Using a valance sheet is a matter of personal preference and how you want to complement your bedroom decor.

Valance sheets are a decorative item that can enhance a bed’s appearance by hiding the base. They also serve practical purposes, like dust prevention and hiding items stored under the bed. In the past, valance sheets were popular for hiding unattractive divan bases. However, as many modern divans are available in various beautiful materials, valance sheets are not strictly necessary.

What is the difference between a valance sheet and a valance?

A valance sheet and a valance can enhance the aesthetics of a bed and bedroom, but they are used slightly differently. A valance sheet covers the mattress and goes down to the floor, covering all sides of the bed. While a valance, sometimes referred to as a bed skirt, covers the base only.

What size valance sheet do I need?

The size of the valance sheet you choose should match the size of your bed. For instance, if you have a standard 4’6” (135 cm) double bed, you need a valance sheet that is the same size.

You should also consider an appropriate drop length for the valance sheet. This is the amount of fabric that hangs down from the top of the bed base to the floor. Valances typically come with standard 15” or 16” drops, although some manufacturers can make them shorter or longer depending on your requirements. For example, some prefer valances that drag on the floor to create a more dramatic look, while others prefer shorter valances for a tidier appearance.

How often should you wash a valance sheet?

Washing valance sheets every one to two weeks, like regular sheets, ensures a clean and hygienic sleeping environment. Always refer to the manufacturer’s care instructions when cleaning your valance sheet.

Final thoughts

Some people consider valance sheets as outdated and unnecessary. Nevertheless, a well-chosen valance sheet can enhance the look of any bedroom and hide under-bed clutter and imperfections.
