Duvet sizes explained: What size do you need?

Article navigation

There are typically four standard UK duvet sizes - single, double, king, and super king. However, the exact dimensions can vary depending on the brand. Double-check the measurements of both your mattress and duvet to ensure a comfortable fit.

A well-chosen duvet can help keep you warm, comfortable and cosy in bed. While selecting the right material and tog rating is important, duvet-sizing is often overlooked and can significantly impact your sleep quality. A duvet that is too big can appear untidy, while one that is too small might leave you exposed during the night and disturb your sleep.

UK duvet sizes

There are typically four standard UK duvet sizes – single, double, king, and super king. However, the exact dimensions for each size can vary between brands. Before purchasing, always double-check the dimensions of the duvet and your mattress to ensure a proper fit.

Duvet dimensions (width x length)To fit mattress size
Single135 cm x 200 cm (53 in x 78 in)90 cm x 190 cm (3’0″ x 6’3″)
Double200 cm x 200 cm (78 in x 78 in)135 cm x 190 cm (4’6″ x 6’3″)
King225 cm x 220 cm (88 in x 86 in)150 cm 200 cm (5’0″ x 6’6″)
Super King260 cm x 220 cm (102 in x 86 in)180 cm 200 cm (6’0″ x 6’6″)

Single duvet size

A single duvet measures 135 cm x 200 cm and is designed to fit a 3’0” (90 cm) bed. This size duvet is suitable for a child or a single adult.

Double duvet size

A double duvet measuring 200 cm x 200 cm is suitable for two adults sharing a 4’6” double bed. Given that most couples in the UK sleep in double beds, this duvet size is a popular option.

A double duvet can also be used on a small double bed (4’0”), also known as a three-quarter bed, but there will be a generous amount of overhang. However, some brands produce a 4’0” duvet specifically for small double beds.

King size duvet size

A king-size duvet, measuring 225 cm x 220 cm, is intended for a king-size bed and is perfect for two adults sharing the bed. King size beds are 3 inches longer than single and double beds. Therefore, a king size duvet is longer to accommodate the extra length of a king size bed.

Super king duvet size

In the UK, the largest standard duvet size is typically a super king duvet. It measures 260 cm x 220 cm and is designed to fit a 6’0” super king size bed.

For a 6’0” zip and link bed, which consists of two separate single beds that can be joined together to create a larger bed, there are several options. If the bed is primarily used as one large bed, a super king duvet will suffice.

However, when the beds are separated, two single duvets are needed to accommodate each sleeper. Keep in mind that zip and link beds are longer than standard single beds, so a custom-sized duvet may be necessary.

An emperor duvet is a non-standard size that measures approximately 290 cm x 235 cm and is designed to fit 6’6” and 7’0” mattresses.

What factors to consider when choosing a duvet size

Choosing the right size duvet is essential for both comfort and aesthetics. Here are several factors to consider when choosing an appropriate duvet size.

Mattress size

The size of your mattress typically determines the size of your duvet. So, for a 4’6” double bed, you will typically choose a 4’6” double duvet. The duvet should be the same size or slightly bigger than the mattress to ensure it covers the bed.

Mattress height

When choosing a duvet, consider your mattress thickness as well. Some mattresses, like pillow tops, tend to be deeper and may require a larger duvet to ensure they are fully covered.

Overhang

Most duvets typically overhang over the sides and bottom of the bed. Some people prefer a generous amount of overhang to create a cosy and luxurious look. However, others prefer a modest amount of overhang for a cleaner and tidier appearance.

However, be mindful that if there is an excessive amount of overhang and not much space to move around the bed, you could easily get tangled and trip up over the duvet.

Your sleeping habits

If you or your partner toss and turn a lot at night or fight over the duvet, a larger duvet can keep both of you covered and comfortable.

Cost

Larger duvets typically cost more than smaller ones, so consider your budget when choosing your duvet size.

Cleaning and maintenance

Larger duvets may be harder to clean and maintain. Some may not fit or spin properly in a standard washing machine and may need to be professionally cleaned.

Should you buy a duvet a size bigger than the mattress?

Whether you share a bed with someone or sleep alone, choosing a duvet the next size up from your mattress seems like a no-brainer. For example, if you have a standard double bed, consider a king size duvet instead.

Sizing up benefits sleeping partners who regularly hog or fight over who gets the duvet. A larger duvet ensures both sleepers remain covered, which is especially crucial during colder nights. But even if you sleep alone, there’s nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a large, cosy duvet. However, be mindful that a large duvet can result in additional overhang, which can look untidy, especially in smaller spaces.

The extra overhang can also be problematic with certain types of beds, such as those with footboards, where it may not be possible to tuck the duvet in properly at the bottom of the bed. There’s also the additional cost to consider when upgrading to a bigger duvet.

How to measure your mattress for a duvet

To measure your mattress accurately, remove all bedding, including sheets, blankets, mattress protectors, and pillows. You can leave a mattress topper in place if it’s part of your regular setup, as it affects the overall height when in use.

After removing the bedding, use a tape measure or ruler to measure the mattress width from edge to edge at its widest point. Repeat this process for the length, measuring from the head to the foot of the mattress.

To determine mattress thickness, measure the depth from the top to the bottom. If your mattress sits inside a frame, consider lifting it out for a more precise measurement.

Don’t forget to record the dimensions on your phone or on paper for reference.

Should a duvet cover be bigger than the duvet?

A duvet cover has an open end that slips over the duvet. It protects the duvet during use and adds a decorative element. It should match the duvet’s size, as anything bigger can cause the duvet to shift and bunch inside the cover.

Final thoughts

When choosing a duvet, size matters, so ensure you double-check the measurements of both your mattress and duvet to ensure a comfortable fit.
